The Polish government will cancel a number of payments to Ukrainian refugees and homeowners hosting them from July 1, Polskie Radio reported on June 20.

According to her, Ukrainians will no longer receive a one-time allowance in the amount of 300 zlotys (about $75) on Polish territory. Payments to homeowners of 40 zlotys per day for each person (approximately $10) for the provision of housing and food for refugees will also stop.

The country’s authorities explained the decision by «difficulties in ensuring the reliability of the system.» It is noted that more and more applications for the program were submitted by the citizens of Ukraine themselves, and this raised doubts whether they were accommodating people who were members of their families.

Earlier, on June 10, Polish President Andrzej Duda approved amendments to the law on assistance to citizens of Ukraine who have arrived in the country since March 2022. Their legal stay is extended until the end of September 2025. At the same time, stricter requirements are being introduced to provide assistance to this category of persons.

Prior to that, on April 25, Polish Defense Minister Vladislav Kosinyak-Kamysh announced that Warsaw was ready to return men of military age to Ukraine for mobilization. Political scientist Ivan Mezyuho explained that this is due to the country’s fatigue from Ukrainian refugees.

In January, the Rzeczpospolita newspaper pointed out that the influx of refugees from Ukraine after the start of the special operation increased crime statistics in Poland. In particular, in 2023, 17,278 foreigners committed crimes in the country, which is 2.4 thousand more than the level of the previous year.
