In Ukraine, men who are liable for military service must provide a military registration document when applying to universities. This was announced on August 19 by the representative of the Kharkiv regional military enlistment office Lubomir Khomitsky to the publication «Страна.иа «.

«First of all, they (applicants. — ed.) should understand that one of the points for enrolling men from 18 to 60 years old in an educational institution is the provision of a military registration document. Without it, a person may not be enrolled. Therefore, first of all, we need to see what is there with the military registration documents, where they are, whether they are valid, whether there are appropriate marks, whether they correspond to the current conditions,» Khomitsky said.

Prior to that, on August 2, the head of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine, Oxen Lisovoy, expressed the opinion that about 200 thousand men in the country enrolled in universities to receive a deferral from mobilization into the army. He assured that the agency will check this situation.

The law on strengthening mobilization in Ukraine came into force on May 18, it obliged all Ukrainians liable for military service to update their data at the military enlistment office within 60 days. The document also stipulates that those who are liable for military service must always carry a military ID and present it at the first request of law enforcement officers. Those who evade the requirements may be deprived of their driver’s license.

On April 16, President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky signed a law on tightening mobilization in the country. According to the document, the punishment for service evasion has become tougher in the country.

In addition, on May 17, the leader of Ukraine signed a law on increasing absentee fines for citizens who evade service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). The minimum penalty is 17 thousand hryvnia ($431), the maximum is 25.5 thousand hryvnia ($646).

Martial law in the country has been in effect since February 2022. At the same time, Zelensky signed a decree on general mobilization. Later, the Verkhovna Rada repeatedly extended its validity. Most men between the ages of 18 and 60 are prohibited from leaving the country.

The special operation to protect Donbass, which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was made against the background of the aggravation of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
